Welcome to Nekodate!
Spring has arrived in Japan.
On March 3rd, we celebrate “Hina Matsuri” (Doll’s Festival), also known as Girl’s Day.
It is a day to pray for the health and happiness of young girls.
Traditionally, families display a set of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, and their court from the Heian period (over 1,000 years ago).
But at Nekodate, we don’t use dolls. We use cats. Welcome to the “Meow” Matsuri!
1. The Royal Couple (Odairi-sama & Ohina-sama)
The top tier of the display is reserved for the Emperor and Empress.

Here sit our feline majesties.
The male cat (left) holds a ritual baton, while the female cat (right) is dressed in a stunning multi-layered robe called “Junihitoe.”
Set against a golden folding screen (“byobu”), they look dignified, regal, and very fluffy.
2. The Living Doll Stand (Hina-dan)
Usually, the dolls are arranged on a red stair-stepped stand.
But cats… well, cats don’t like to stay still.

We tried to arrange the “Three Court Ladies” and the “Five Musicians” on the stand.
Instead, we got a pile of kittens playing on the red carpet.
Some are sleeping, some are batting at the decorations.
It’s a chaotic, purring pyramid of happiness.
3. The Colors of Spring (Hishimochi)
Hina Matsuri is also a celebration of colors.
You will often see diamond-shaped rice cakes called “Hishimochi,” layered in pink, white, and green.

Pink represents peach blossoms, white represents snow, and green represents new growth.
This white cat seems mesmerized by the soft pastel colors.
The scene captures the gentle, feminine aesthetic of this holiday.
4. Peach Blossom Festival (Momo no Sekku)
Another name for this day is “Momo no Sekku” (Peach Festival), as it coincides with the blooming of peach trees.

While cherry blossoms (Sakura) get all the fame, peach blossoms are equally beautiful with their vivid pink color.
Here, a cat enjoys a nap on a branch, surrounded by the deep pink flowers that symbolize the energy of spring.
Wishing for Happiness
Hina Matsuri is a day to wish for growth and good health.
Whether you have a daughter, a son, or a “fur-baby,” we hope this spring brings warmth and joy to your family.
Which “Cat Doll” would you display in your home?
